Douz, gateway to the Sahara: planning your desert excursion

Camel treks at sunset, dunes that start at the edge of town, and a palm grove of 400,000 trees. How to reach Douz and what to expect.

Douz, gateway to the Sahara: planning your desert excursion

Douz is where the road ends and the Grand Erg Oriental begins. The town calls itself the gateway to the Sahara, and it earns the name: walk past the last houses and the dunes simply start.

Getting there

Most travellers come from Djerba — a private transfer crosses the Roman causeway and reaches Douz in about two and a half hours, door to door at a fixed price per vehicle. From Tozeur, the legendary crossing of the Chott el Jerid salt lake takes a similar time.

Book the camel trek for the last hour before sunset — the dunes turn gold and the heat lets go.

What to do once you are there

The classic is the camel ride into the dunes from the Zone Touristique, one to two hours at sunset. Add quad rides, a night under Berber tents at Ksar Ghilane’s hot-spring oasis (90 minutes further by 4x4), and the Thursday market where the oasis still trades dates and livestock.

When to go

October to April is ideal — warm days, cool desert nights. In late December the International Festival of the Sahara fills the town with horsemen, poets and drums. Summer afternoons exceed 40°C; if you come then, keep the dunes for dawn and dusk.

Hotels cluster at the edge of the palm grove, pools facing the sand. Your driver drops you at the entrance — and the desert starts across the street.
